The Villager Pétanque Club
The Villager Pétanque Club was formed in 1991 by a number of players who had formerly played at the Amazon & Tiger in Harvel. One of those players was the former landlord of the Amazon and Tiger, Peter Kelly, who persuaded the Littley family to install a piste at the Villager. The ex Amazon & Tiger players were joined by some new recruits from the Villager, mainly drawn from the darts team, and in that year 2 teams were entered in the Kent pétanque league under the somewhat unflattering names of “Viles “ and “Lechers”. In 1992 the club entered into a twinning arrangement with the Fort Mardyck Petanque Club in Dunkirk a relationship which has continued ever since. Each year the two clubs visit one another to play pétanque and to renew friendships which have built up over the years. The club’s membership continued to grow and it became necessary to build four additional pistes in the adjacent woodland owned by Vigo Parish Council. There are now plans to increase the terrain by a further 2 pistes. In 2003 the club was joined by a number of players who formerly played at the Ex Blues Club in Chislehurst. Currently the club has 6 teams in the KPA summer league and enters 2 teams in the winter league. In addition there are a number of club competitions and various “open competitions” held on Sundays during the summer season.
